What does it take to incorporate in California?

If you want to make it on your own - you would need to become familiar
with the following web site: http://www.sos.ca.gov/ (California Secretary of State).
And particularly, California Business Portal http://www.sos.ca.gov/business/business.htm

California Business Search
This search can be used to determine if an entity is currently registered with the
Secretary of State. However, it is not intended to provide a name availability search.
For information on checking or reserving an entity name, please refer to Name Availability for Corporations, Limited Liability Companies or Limited Partnerships.

Corporations Search Tips
Results will include only those names containing all of the search words. Including a word that is not part of the name will result in no matching record. Choose distinctive words in the name for the best results. The result list may contain more names than the one you are searching for. Simply choose the name you want from the list. Punctuation, spacing and plurals will make a difference in the search results. Note: Including a period after letters in an acronym, a single character or a string of two or more characters will result in no matching record.
The search engine will not search words that are too common including “THE”, “AND”, “OF”, “INC”, “CALIFORNIA”, “INCORPORATED”, “CORP” and “CORPORATION”.
If you are unable to locate a corporate record, you may request a more extensive search by ordering a status report. Fees and instructions for ordering a status report are included on the Business Entities Records Order Form.

Checking the availability of a corporate name
A preliminary check of the availability of a corporate name can be made by mailing a name availability inquiry letter to the Secretary of State’s office in Sacramento.
A Name Availability Inquiry Letter form is available in PDF file format and may be viewed, filled in, and printed from your computer using the most current version of the Adobe Reader (available for free from Adobe’s website). Email or online inquiries cannot be accepted at this time. If you have a recurring need to search corporate name availability, you may establish a prepaid account with the Secretary of State’s office, so that you can inquire about the availability of a corporate name through a telephone technician for a fee of $4.00 per search.
For more information about prepaid accounts, please contact the Accounting Office at (916) 653-1233. (Please note: It takes about two weeks to establish an account.)
Checking the availability of a corporate name does not reserve the name and has no binding effect on the Secretary of State, nor does it confer any rights to a name.
